Exploring Music Genres: Metal

Metal is a music genre that evolved from rock and blues influences. The genre is distinguished by its heavy riffs, dramatic vocals, and distorted guitars with often aggressive rhythms. Metal music explores themes such as mythology, darkness, inner struggle, rebellion, and social issues. Over time, metal has split into a number of sub genres, each with its own unique take on the genre.

Metal music originated in the United Kingdom and the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The genre was heavily influenced by blues, rock, and psychedelic music that had darker tones and heavy distortion. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, metal was defined by its heavy riffs, dark imagery, and slow to mid tempos. In the 1980s, metal split into two distinct sub genres, thrash metal, which was faster and more aggressive, and glam metal, which was more commercial and image-focused. This separation eventually led to metal gaining a growing number of fans. The 1990s witnessed the emergence of more diverse sub genres such as death metal and black metal which focused on atmosphere and brutality. From the 2000s to present day, metal has become a heavily influential music genre with its diversity.    

Metal has various aspects that make the genre so recognizable. In the process of production there is often an emphasis on a heavy, powerful sound alongside prominent guitar distortion. The mixing prioritises clarity, especially in modern metal. Digital tools are commonly used alongside traditional recording. Among the range of instruments used in metal, the electric guitar with high distortion was incredibly important to the genre. However, there are other instruments that are used to enhance the atmosphere and sound of the genre. The bass guitar is often used to reinforce the heaviness and rhythm. Drum kits increase the speed and intensity of the music, keyboards appear occasionally in some sub genres, and digital effects and sampling are used in modern metal. Metal’s vocal styles range from clean singing to screaming and guttural vocals. The lyrics often delve into themes of mythology, darkness, social issues, and personal struggles.   

Metal has many influential musicians who have helped define the genre. The English band Black Sabbath formed in 1968 and are often considered the founders of heavy metal. The band released a number of popular albums such as ‘Paranoid’ in 1970 and their debut album ‘Black Sabbath’. Another English band that formed a year later is Judas Priest. This band helped define the classic metal sound, and refined the genre with cleaner production and faster tempos. Lastly, the American band Metallica introduced metal to a wider global audience through the sub genre thrash metal. ‘Master of Puppets’ was Metallica’s third studio album, the album combined political and emotional depth with technical skills.

Metal is a widely diverse and influential genre that has significantly evolved since its formation in the late 1960s. Metal has acted as a powerful voice for rebellion and expression, through its heavy sound. Today, metal continues to maintain a strong presence in global charts and has left a lasting impact across music.
